Yes, GM could have been the one you think of when anyone mentions the electric car. Just as we called a photo copy a Xerox. Xerox didn’t actually invent the photo copier they just made an marketed the easiest to use model.
GM made a couple of fundamental mistakes regarding electric cars and alternatively fueled vehicles in general. The first was failing to realize that their products had a serious flaw, they required large amounts of fuel that comes from countries that can be unfriendly. This left their entire company vulnerable to whims of fuel prices.
The second was steadfast dedication to the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to the exclusion of all else. GM had no product diversity, it was buy a vehicle that ran on petroleum or buy nothing from us. The only reason GM had E85 ready cars in the inventory was because Brazil required them. A company like Mitsubishi makes a lot more than cars, if it runs on electricity Mitsubishi makes it they just don’t market it in the US.

It would have been silly for them to continue working on that in the 90’s. Since gas prices were not inflated like they are now, the demand for such a product was not there.

If by that you mean overpriced with little market share, they’re already there thanks to the unions.
