What Is The Difference Between Gm And Ge?
February 8th, 2010 Posted in GM
Are genetic modification and genetic engineering different? We had a long discussion on this over lunch today and didn’t come to a firm conclusion. What do you think each term means, and are they different?

Genetic engineering, recombinant DNA technology, genetic modification/manipulation (GM) and gene splicing are terms that apply to the direct manipulation of an organism’s genes.so they are one and the same thing

I don`t think there is much difference in modern usage, Genetic Modification does sound less threatening though.
As I understand it GM foods are able to withstand some pesticides and pests such as parasites and fungi, grow in harsher climatic conditions, have `better` traits generally.
You could argue selection of offspring is conventional GM which does not involve GE.
To me the most disturbing trend is putting 3rd World countries to ransom by patenting the DNA sequences of indigenous plants in those countries. It seems equivalent to patenting the air or fresh water!
It really needs to be sorted, It`s outrageous.

$$$$
genetic modification takes an apple and says we want this so that the bugs wont eat it! so gentic engineers take the apple and slice and dice and then find a way to mess with the dna of the apple so that it grow diffenent and can withstand the problems of the bugs!

Genetic modification= chemistry < make something different with what you have
Genetic engineering =physics< tinker with the inner workings and hidden mechanisms to create something totally new.
Universal soldier= genetic modifications
Alien = genetic engineering

Genetic engineering sounds more intelligent; makes educated people happier I guess.

GM makes cars. GE makes light bulbs.
