Selling Your Car To The Government

February 21st, 2010 Posted in Sell my Car

Selling your car to the government is becoming more common in a public auction setting. The sale can be used as a way to pay off debt to agencies like the Internal Revenue Service. The way the repo business is booming, you may not even have the opportunity to even sell your car; it may just be taken from you.

Your governmental representatives; be it your Congressional representative or your state representative can inform you of such auctions in your local newspapers or other wanted ads. Most of the advertisements in your local paper are trying to promote the idea of you buying a car seized by the government at a seventy or eighty percent reduction off the original asking price, so the process of finding out how to sell your car at an auction like this is a little more complicated. Local elected officials should be able to help you if you can make the call.

There is usually some sort of ten percent fee or higher that a state government might charge you in order to have them take it off your hands. The fees can only go up as you ask for other services such as the detailing of your vehicle for example. Given these facts unless you want the government to take a large chunk of your profits, it is recommended that you do all of the preparation before you go down this route to sell your car instead of requesting their assistance.

It is also possible that a local government might just need an engine to help run one of their police cars for example. So if you have been working on a car to refurbish the whole thing, but the expenses and time/effort involved is just too much, but the car has a powerful engine, maybe it is a good idea to sell it to the police department. Policemen need faster vehicles with finely tuned engines to chase criminals who may be fleeing the scene. You just may be the person to aid them in their efforts by giving them the perfect offer on a car.
