engines appear identical and are the same displacement, but the 325ix is an awd car and the 528e is rwd. will the bellhousing from the older 528e bolt up to the tranny in the 325ix, and what about the motor mounts?

Theoretically you can put any engine into any car, provided that a. you have enough space for it, and b. you have all the wiring harnesses for the new engine.
But is it feasible? I don’t think so. Especially you can find a M20B25 engine in good shape real easily. Your car is an “i,” and the 528 “e” engine is a little different. Same block and pretty much the same all the way around, except the compression ratio, cam, and the intake are different. “e” engines had a lot of torque, but lacked horsepower, but you do get better gas mileage. “i” engines are more rev-happy and has more torqu on the higher revs.
Look around for another M20B25 “i” engine. These engines are virtually indestructable. Take care of it and it’ll hit 300k no problems.

to the best of my knowledge the 528 isnt fuel injected. the 325ix does have fuel injection, so that might cause some problems. if you check out the forums theres tons of e30 guys getting rid of their m20 engines for cheap too.
