How Much More Costly Is Maintenance To A Bmw Versus Other Vehicles?

December 18th, 2009 Posted in BMW

Apart from warranty issues ( and bmw is getting tighter all the time re warranty claims) BMW is at the top of the scale in terms of costs of general maintenance and servicing – in the range of 1.5 to 2 X cost of American and Japanese product. Additionally cost of replacement parts are very high.
So these are overall good cars, and decent handlers (but quite low on the power and performance side) and reasonably well built, but drivetrain dependability is so-so , therefore if its a used BMW or a long term hold after warranty expect that your service and maintenance costs will be very high indeed.

New BMW’s offer a 50,000 mile or 4 year $0 maintenance program. Pretty much the only things you have to pay for are for your gas and your tires (when they are worn out). Also, if you are buying a certified pre-owned (CPO) the warranty extends an additional 2 years from the original manufactures warranty or 100k miles. Generally speaking once they are out of warranty, BMW’s or any German made car tends to have higher maintenance and shop charges because of the one has to go to a authorized dealer because of certifed technicians they use.
Japanese luxury cars, Lexus (Toyota) tend to be not as expensive because of the simplicity of the cars. It is not required to take a Lexus to the dealer every time it needs maintenance, like a oil change, or tires rotation.

New BMW’s come with a 4-year/50,000 mile warranty that also includes scheduled maintenance. If you buy a certified pre-owned car the warranty is extended to 6-years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date, but you are responsible for maintenance.
Is a BMW more expensive to maintain than a Chevy or Toyota? Sure. Is it more than a comparable high-end car from Mercedes, Audi, Lexus or others? Probably not more so than the German brands, maybe a little more than Lexus.

depends on how old the bimmer is…. mine’s a 2003.
also depends on if you’re planning on being anal about the maintenance or if you’re just gonna play it by ear (fix when something may go wrong).
for instance, comparing my other vehicles to my e46….
oil filter: Fordexplorer=$5 vs e46=$22 CAD
    4L oil: Fordexplorer=$12 vs e46=$30 CAD synthetic
brake pads: HondaCivic=$35 vs e46=$130 CAD
plus on top of the regular obvious maintenance, if any warning lights go off on my e46, i’d gave to see a dealer to diagnose and reset; they charge an arm and a leg.

I think the newer ones have a six year 100,000 mile warranty that is transferrable and that will cover your windsheild wipers so zero. Depends on what you get my cousin has a 2008 535xi and he doesnt have to worry about a thing the dealer takes care of everything for six years 100,000 miles

You’ll have to check, but I think BMW has a free maintenance program for the first 100,00 miles if purchased new.

It’s really depend on the car and the warranty you have on it.
