Where did you get this part?
Did you buy a vin-specific ignition barrel from a dealer? If it is not vin-specific (meaning it has tumblers not set or positioned to work with your existing key) then your key would not be able to turn. If it is vin-specific and you bought it from a dealer then you have to return it to them for replacement.
In aftermarket barrels, they usually provide a separate replacement key.

I had a new key made for my 740. It didn't work until the dealer programmed it to work with the lock. It's an anti theft idea, I guess.
I guess yours is the same problem. In my case the dealer put the key in the lock, turned it to the "on" position and pressed a combination of buttons on the key. Bingo!
Check the documentation that came with the lock, or probably you'll have to get the car to the dealer. In any case you should phone the dealer... maybe he can tell you how to do it over the phone.
BMW's have a lot of things that can only be done at the dealer unless you know a BMW mechanic. (Technician) or buy one of those Bentley workshop repair manuals.
Good luck - they're great cars.

It sounds like your key is worn. I see this a lot. A worn key in a new lock cylinder usually does not work. If it is a coded lock you ordered from the dealer it should match the other locks on the car. Order a new key from the dealer and that should fix your problem.
