Got A New Ignition Barrel For Bmw 318 But The Key Will Go In But Won’t Turn ?

February 8th, 2010 Posted in BMW

Tricia, ONLY use barrels supplied by BMW. I have known customers to use third party parts where they fit but they do not turn. By the sounds of it, you already have fitted the new barrel. In which case have it recovered to BMW main dealer and have them look at it. Ensure you give the dealer warning as they will have to make special arrangement for you car to be stored at their premises until they fir a new BMW approved barrel.

Where did you get this part?
Did you buy a vin-specific ignition barrel from a dealer? If it is not vin-specific (meaning it has tumblers not set or positioned to work with your existing key) then your key would not be able to turn. If it is vin-specific and you bought it from a dealer then you have to return it to them for replacement.
In aftermarket barrels, they usually provide a separate replacement key.

I had a new key made for my 740. It didn’t work until the dealer programmed it to work with the lock. It’s an anti theft idea, I guess.
I guess yours is the same problem. In my case the dealer put the key in the lock, turned it to the “on” position and pressed a combination of buttons on the key. Bingo!
Check the documentation that came with the lock, or probably you’ll have to get the car to the dealer. In any case you should phone the dealer… maybe he can tell you how to do it over the phone.
BMW’s have a lot of things that can only be done at the dealer unless you know a BMW mechanic. (Technician) or buy one of those Bentley workshop repair manuals.
Good luck – they’re great cars.

It sounds like your key is worn. I see this a lot. A worn key in a new lock cylinder usually does not work. If it is a coded lock you ordered from the dealer it should match the other locks on the car. Order a new key from the dealer and that should fix your problem.
