Auto-transmission failures are common for this model year cars, with BMW claiming their transmission fluid lasts a “lifetime” (so-called “lifetime fill”), owners are finding that their automatic transmission failing at around 100,000miles.
The symptoms are drivers suddenly lose their reverse gear without any warning (ie; reverse gear behaves like neutral, but with reverse lights on). Do an online search for “323i transmission failure” and you will see a bunch of hits for this model year.
If you want to buy, get a manual transmission or a car with a rebuilt auto transmission.
Be careful because this is a potential $4,000 repair job.
