Can A Craftsman Garage Opener Be Compatible With A Bmw X5 Universal Remote System?

I tried 2 options from the manual to get the Universal Remote System on my BMW X5 to work with my Craftsman garage opener unit but it’s not working. Am I too far from the unit? What should be distance from the car to the unit?

    BMW homelink system should work with most garage openers. If the BMW instructions don’t work, bring it to the dealer.
    I believe you need to hold the door opener right next to the BMW homelink unit when programming.
