2004 Bmw 323 Ci Does It Have A Speed Restrictor?
February 7th, 2010 Posted in BMW
I was recently at the Speedway and was trying to get it up to 150mph like my 1999 BMW 323i will but it seems like it holds off at 125? Does it have a governor on it?

Yes, it has a governor on it. You will either have to have a racing chip installed (Dinan makes one) or have your ECU remapped (by a professional who KNOWS what he’s doing).
Where I differ with the answerer above is that you should check with a professional BMW mechanic/tuner before you have your catalytic converter removed. Some BMWs require backpressure from the catalytic converter to function properly, so you could end up killing 50+ horsepower by removing the cat. Also, if you live in a smog check area removing the cat will cause a check engine light which will automatically fail your vehicle, meaning you can’t register or drive it legally. There are other ways to boost your performance without straight piping your exaust.

Yes, they are all fitted with limiters, the 323’s 6 cylinder engine could easily push out 180mph (i know this because i have a friend who races with one) with afew slight mods.
The biggest restrictor is programed into the ECU (Engine control unit) which controls the rev limiter and fueling.
There are companies that can ‘re-map’ your ECU to get the most out of the engine, but you will end up having to sacrifice something else like fuel economy.
If you were to re-map your ECU, get a high flow air filter and remover the Catalytic converter, you would see a massive improvement in both horse power and top speed.

Of course. All modern vehicles have limiters.

Yes. Stock most American BMW’s are electronically limited to about 137mph.
